Hillary Clinton May Be Next Secretary of State

The rumors abound online that President Elect Obama might be poised to offer SecState to his chief Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

As crazy as it may sound, the prospect doesn’t really bother me that much. She started off right on the War on Terror, tacked left when it looked like the politically popular thing to do–she is a Clinton, after all–and is now coming back to the correct conclusion about trying to destroy those that would destroy us. And on other issues, such as Iran, she’s been far, far closer to correct than many in her party, including The One himself.

While the prospect of a Democratic SecState doesn’t exactly fill me with glee (any more than a Democratic Administration does), Hillary is far, far preferable to, say, Secretary of State John Kerry.

I think that, for national safety and security reasons, I gotta cautiously support this appointment, if it actually happens.

Well, as my caption for the pic below – Hillary could do a LOT of damage to Barack as Secy State. However, that would end up as blow-back on her politically if she wanted to make a run in 2012. If she’s Secy State for a failing President she’ll be completely ruined. If she’s successful, all the credit will go to Barack.

I see it as a no-win situation for Hillary.

Actually, there are two ways for it to work to Hillary’s benefit. Both start out the same, with her giving good advice, but in a way that Barack will ignore it… for instance, giving the right advice, but then not really fighting for it.

In Scenario A, she then hits the campaign trail in 2012 and says, in essence, “I told President Obama to do [A], but he went and did [B] instead. When I am President, we will do [A].” In short, she’ll be turning the age old “Buck Stops Here” adage against Obama.

In Scenario B, pointed out by commenter usinkorea over on the Confederate Yankee blog, she breaks from the Administration over some disagreement (set up as above), and immediately starts campaigning. The rest is as Scenario A above.

Either way, Hillary looks good, Obama looks like a buffoon… if, mind you, she successfully pulls it off. But I think she’s more than capable of trying something like that.
