“A troubled and afflicted mankind looks to us, pleading for us to keep our rendezvous with destiny; that we will uphold the principles of self-reliance, self-discipline, morality, and, above all, responsible liberty for every individual that we will become that shining city on a hill.” — Ronald Wilson Reagan

Liberty University Isn’t Living Up To Its Name

Apparently, Liberty University (founded by Jerry Falwell) doesn’t believe in liberty on campus. They’ve removed official recognition from a group of Democrats who were meeting on their campus.

Now, this is probably gonna surprise some of you (but I hope not my fellow bloggers here), but I think Liberty is absolutely wrong on this one.

Liberty means that people with whom you don’t agree should have the ability to express views that you don’t agree with. Thus, even though I disagree vehemently with the Ku Klux Klan’s agenda (watch the lefties leave the previous part out but quote the part to follow), I support their right to hold meetings or a parade if they wish.

For Liberty to not recognize one party’s on-campus group but presumably continue to recognize the other is a slap in the face to all of us who believe in the true meaning of the First Amendment, and it should be denounced both by conservatives and lefties.

This is no different from a university barring Republican groups from meeting on campus. Now if the university made it a policy that no political groups of any kind could meet on campus, that would make sense. To single out an individual or group of people because he/she/they have opposing views is completely wrong. Shame on Liberty University!
