Liberty University Offers A “Compromise”

This is an addition to CW’s earlier post. Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. of Liberty University offered a “compromise” to The College Democrats, so that they may keep their charter and remain on campus [Article - Liberty University Democrats group reluctant to accept Falwell proposal].

After reading the referenced article, where does one see the “compromise”?

If Liberty University is a private educational institution, the argument could be made that this is not state-sponsored censorship. However, censorship by any other name is still censorship. All Liberty University is doing is affirming the belief of anti-Christians, that being Christians are intolerant bigots. Blackmailing a group of people whom one disagrees with in the name of compromise is not compromise at all. As long as The College Democrats observe campus regulations and peacefully assert their beliefs, what does it matter which political party they are affiliated with?

The College Democrats constitution reads:

“The College Democrats pledges itself to support the philosophy and candidates of the Democratic Party.” The document further states The College Democrats “will take a pro-life stance and support the traditional form of marriage.”

The only question I have is that what if a Democrat candidate runs on a pro-choice platform? That could invalidate The College Democrats constitution and could be construed as a conflict of interests on the part of the members who have vowed to support their party’s candidates, while at the same time taking a pro-life stance. If there is a campus regulation that specifically states if an organization’s charter proves to be deceptive and/or if it violates and/or conflicts with university policy, that organization may be disbanded.

We’ll see what the outcome of this issue is to be.
