GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Tuesday he is suspending his campaign.
He made the announcement at the Gettysburg Hotel in Gettysburg, Pa., talking about his young daughter’s illness and reflecting on the campaign.

Romney Wins Maryland, DC, and Wisconsin
Mitt Romney taking victories in Maryland and the District of Columbia isn’t a big surprise because that’s pretty much his home territory, but his victory in Wisconsin is a bit more interesting, because it’s a midwestern state that was supposed to be an easy win for Rick Santorum.
Mitt Romney’s campaign is moving straight into Pennsylvania after completing a three-contest primary sweep on Tuesday night, as he looks to close the deal in the Republican nominating contest by challenging Rick Santorum on his home turf.
Santorum’s Strategy: Deny Romney A First Ballot Win
As is usual with the AP, they get a few things right and a few things wrong, but let’s take a quick look anyway.
Rick Santorum’s strategy for becoming the Republican presidential nominee comes down to this: prevent Mitt Romney from winning enough delegates to arrive at the GOP convention this summer with a mandate and persuade delegates to ignore election results in their states.
Santorum Beats Obama In Four Battleground States; Romney Trails Obama In Those States
Another blow to the Romney “electability” argument, from Rasmussen Reports:
Santorum leads the president 48% to 44% in the so-called Core Four states. Five percent (5%) prefer some other candidate in this matchup, and two percent (2%) are undecided. This marks a shift from last week, when the president was slightly ahead of Santorum. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Ryan Not Running
Despite calls for him to toss his hat in the ring, he’s decided not to:
Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan has decided for a final time that he will not run for president in 2012, THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned. Ryan, who began seriously considering a bid in late May after Indiana governor Mitch Daniels took himself out of the race, had consulted with top Republicans, including Karl Rove and Frank Luntz, as he contemplated his political future. And though many of those he talked with told him he would be a viable candidate in such a fluid race, even as a late entry, Ryan ultimately decided to continue his focus on debt and entitlement reform as chairman of the House Budget Committee.
An Honest Question For All Conservatives
I’ve been reading a lot of blogs recently–more than previously, as befits the start of the 2012 election season–and I’m seeing something in both the articles and the comments that quite honestly has me scared.
There seems to be a growing sense of “my candidate or no candidate” (close cousin to “my way or the highway”) creeping in… and in some online spaces, not exactly creeping.
Fox News Suspends Gingrich Until He Confirms He’s Not Running In 2012
Fox News has suspended contributors Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum until they decide whether to run for president.
Anchor Bret Baier announced on air late Wednesday morning that the network “has suspended its contributor arrangements” with Gingrich and Santorum for the next 60 days.
Both, Baier said, “have signaled possible runs for the presidency” and it “is Fox policy” for them to be suspended.
With the suspensions, the network has taken its first big step to address mounting concerns that it could run afoul of campaign finance laws and journalistic ethics by continuing to keep on its payroll people who are maneuvering to run for president. But the suspensions of two contributors also leads to questions about three others on the Fox payroll — Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin and John Bolton — who are also weighing White House bids.
Personally, given that they’ve also flirted with running in 2012, Huckabee, Palin, and Bolton should also be suspended under the same terms, which amount to, confirm that you’re not going to run in 2012. Ethics would seem to demand that Fox cease their association with these potential candidates until they take themselves out of the running for 2012 once and for all.
